The Pregnancy Project (Summary and Conflicts)

Summary

In my book “The Pregnancy Project: A memoir” we meet a young girl named Gaby Rodriguez and her family; they live in a small town in Washington State.  I barley started reading yesterday but I will read more throughout the week. So far I have read about Gaby’s complex family. It starts off with her mom. Her mom has seven children Nievitas, Genaro, Sonya, Fabian tony and Jessica. She had her first child at age 14. Her, her husband, and family are living a happy life until she finds out that her husband is having an affair.  She forgives him the first time but the second time she doesn’t because she contacted a disease from him. She then tells him that they are getting divorce. When they do the husband files a petition for full custody of the kids. The father won because the mother couldn’t afford an attorney. So with that she can’t see the kids very often, only 3 hours a week. Later she leaves town with a friend. She meets a guy and spends a night together. Later she finds out that he has family in Mexico. So she leaves him to live with her mother. Meanwhile the husband meets a girl and sells everything he owns to move to Walla Walla, Washington State. Leaving 2 kids with his friends, and the other 2 with his mom, while he takes the youngest, Jessica. The two oldest left to live their own life. She finds out and takes them back she goes and looks for Jessica. When she finds her she demanded him to give Jessica back.  He didn’t really care and gave Jessica up. After a week or two she finds out she is pregnant with Gaby.  Once Gaby starts growing up Gaby notices that all of her siblings and her mom have gotten pregnant at age 14-19. Nievitas keeps on telling her to be the one that makes their mom proud. I believe this book takes place in the present. Is Gaby going to make her mother proud?

Conflict

In my book that I’ve started reading was “The Pregnancy Project: A Memoir”, has a lot of conflicts but one that really stuck out was an external conflict, I believe it is Man vs. Man.  Gaby was 11 when this happened. All of Gaby’s siblings had the similar obstacle they had to face. They all had responsibilities. They all had to take are of a child or more. The youngest child, Jessica had a baby, Carlos, then later has twins. Jessica was still young and like to party. She would ask her oldest sister that she lived with if she can babysit; she would always say “no”. Since Gaby lived next to them with her grandma and mom. Jessica would always ask Gaby to baby sit. I know this because in text her mom yells at her in page 32, it says, “This is your responsibility, not Gaby’s! She is just a child. You had this baby, and now its time to grow up and act like a mother. You can’t keep leaving Carlos with her. You have to stop going out and parting. That part of your life is over.”  This proves that even the mother was annoyed with this. Gaby also says that “This isn’t fair”, which proves that she got annoyed. I mean who wouldn’t be. 

Sold 2 (Summary & Note and Notice)

In my last summary of the book that I have currently finished reading, “Sold”, we met a thirteen-year-old girl named Lakshmi. She lives in a small village in Nepal. Her father sent her to become a maid because they needed money. Lakshmi works for a wealth a woman whom she is her “maid”. She arrives to a house called “Happiness House” and is very happy to start to work and help out her family income. Later she learns the truth. She wasn’t a maid she was sold for prostitution and is told that she has to work until she pays her fathers “debit”.  Lakshmi isn’t the only one who lives in the “ Happiness house” there are a few other girls who she becomes friends with. One day Lakshmi meets an American man who is in disguised so he can gather evidence so that they would be free. I have finished the book and haven’t found when it takes place.

                  For my note and notice, I choose Contrasts and Contradictions. I choose Contrasts and Contradictions because my character Lakshmi was saying things to say but does the total opposite. For example when she was going far away from her family to become a maid she was having theses Contrasts and Contradictions. I know this because in the test it says,“I have hundred of questions to ask her like, how long will it take for us to get there? How do I address my mistress? How can I find Gita? But when the moment came I only ask one: What are these things called movies.”  I think that this proves that   Lakshmi will have a lot of questions unanswered. I also think that she might be nerves and  afraid to go far away from her family. 

Sold

In my book “Sold”, it’s about a young thirteen years old girl named Lakshmi who is money-less. Lakshmi lives in a small village in Nepal. I don’t know when this story accrued but I will soon find out as soon as I read more. Lakshmi lives in a place where women are treated unfair by men. For example, in the text it says, “ Once you married, you must eat your meal only after your husband has had his fill, then you may have what remains” This proves that they have to obey or treat the husband like royalty. One day when her family didn’t have enough money to support the family her stepfather told her she is going to have to be a maid to help out the family with income. What would happen next? Is her stepfather telling the truth? Will working at a young age affect her childhood?

In my book that I’m currently reading “Sold”, has a lot of conflicts but what really stuck out was an internal conflict, man vs. self. Lakshmi is a thirteen years old girl who lives in a small village in Nepal and is moneyless. One day she had her period, which means you have became a women. Now that Lakshmi is a woman her mother explains to her that she has to respect and follow the traditions of becoming a women. For example, in the book it says “Now, she says, you must carry your self with modesty. Bow your head in the presence of men.” This shows that in her country, men are in power of the women, which makes it hard to live with Especially if you aren’t a man. Since Lakshmi is poor she cannot afford pad/tampons she has to uses goat fur. One big problem that she has with having her period is traditions. For example in the text it says, "you must stay out of sight for seven days She days. Even the sun see you until you’ve been purified.” knowing Lakshmi by now she is an active girl and would hate to stay out of sight for seven days. I mean who wouldn’t?

A Memoir Positive blog 2

Summary 

In my last blog I talk about a little bit about the book, "A Memoir Positive", I introduced you to the character, Paige. So far we have met trouble.  Paige becomes best friends with a girl name Yasmine. One day Paige was talking to Yasmine in lunch and told her that she was HIV positive; Yamsime couldn't keep a secret. Everyone in six-grade now knows that Paige has HIV and the bulling starts.  She soon meant Amber and Ethan. Paige has a crush on Ethan and Amber is an eight-grader cheerleader. Soon that week she stops talking to Yasmine and continues to get bullied. Her mother soon finds out and her and Paige filled out a lawsuit in the US Federal District court. Then their law suit in all over the newspaper. Paige was given an interview and she got to tell her story. What will happen to Paige would she become famous? Will the bullying stop?

Conflicts

 In the book I’m currently reading “A Memoir Positive “, has a lot of conflicts, but one conflict that stuck out was external conflict, man vs. society. Paige is a girl who has to live with a disability of HIV. Paige told her best friend of her disability. Soon her secret spread like a wild fire. She notice when a seven grader said “Careful’ don’t drink after her, she has Aids.” Within seconds the bullying began. Paige wasn’t the only one who would be bullied but her friends to.  For example, they would bully her crush Ethan because they kissed. They would say, “you better not kiss Paige, or you’ll get AIDS, too.” In the hallways they would call Paige “PAIDS”. All this bulling caused Paige to cut her self with a blade. The bullying went to far.
