Hope Was Here ( Summary & Conflicts)

The new book that I am reading is called “Hope Was Here”.  I barely started reading so, I don’t know that much. We first meet a 14 teen girl who starts off as a waitress in Brooklyn.  When she turns 16 her and her Aunt move to Mulhoney, Wisconsin. Whenever she left a place she would always write  “HOPE WAS HERE”. It’s how she says good-bye to places. Hope changed her name form Tulip to Hope because she didn’t like that name and because it made her feel terrible about her mom since she left her with her sister, though she visits sometimes. Once they got to Wisconsin they had to find a job. Hope found a new dinner where she can work at with her aunt. The man they were going to work for had leukemia and needed help fast. This book takes time in the present. What do you think would happen to hope’s new job? What would happen to the man?

The first few pages that I read from in my new book “Hope Was Here” had a lot of conflicts. One conflict that stuck out was an external conflict, MAN vs. Society. When hope was born she was very fragile because she was born too early, “two pounds and two ounces” she said.  Hope had a lot of difficulties in the first few months of her life. For example in the text its said “I kept on gasping for air, like I couldn’t get the hang of breathing. I couldn’t eat either; couldn’t suck out of a bottle”. This shows how difficult it was for her. Due to her fragileness, her mom didn’t want to take care of a baby so she left her with her older sister, Addie. The good thing is that Addie always wanted baby though she couldn’t have one.  In the book it says that she, “three miscarriages and her no good husband”. This is important because Addie was desperate for a baby while Hope’s mom wasn’t. Anyway, Addie never gave up on Hope and Hope never gave up on her.

The Pregnancy Project ( Summary & Character traits)

In my last blog of “ A Memoir: The Pregnancy Project”, I talk about how we meet a girl named Gaby and her complex family. They grew up in a small city in Washington and moved to another city in Washington later in Gaby’s teen years. This book takes place in the present.  Now that I finished the book, I can tell why the name of the book is “ The Pregnancy Project”.  So one day Gaby was assigned a project for her senior year and she kept on thinking about it. What would she do, “ Visit foster kids? Volunteer at an agency?”. Until next class period, Science, they were talking about DNA, genes and babies. That’s when she thought,  “ I would fake my pregnancy.” She decided to tell a handful of people to tell them that she faked her pregnancy . For example, she will tell her mom and her boyfriend etc. So through out the book she records people reaction, how she feels, and how people are treating her differently. Every body watches her belly get bigger and bigger. Then she reveals the truth. What is peoples reaction?

I my book the “A Memoir :Pregnancy Project”, we get introduce to a young girl named Gaby. I think that Gaby is a Brave and Inspiring to the public. I think she is brave because she does something that nobody would ever want to experience. She would have to put up with the sayings that people would tell her. I know this because in the text it said, “It was a lot harder to brush off than I thought. I grew defense it’s a lousy feeling to walk around all day knowing that people are gossiping about you, judging you predicting you have no future because you were stupid. I couldn’t help take things personally. These were my friends.” This shows that it took bravery to fake your own pregnancy. I think that she is also inspiring because she gave the public some very great advice to people who are actually pregnant or have a friend or family that is pregnant and have to put up with this. I know this because in the text it says “ Knowing you might be faced with strong criticism from your peers could have been enough to persuade you not to attempt such a feat, but apparently you recognized the value in such a project and willingly played the role of a pregnant teen in order to draw attention to the plight of many teens who in reality them selves in this really difficult situation.” This shows very inspiring saying that she said for teens with a pregnancy situation.
